ISO 9001:2026 is here.

The sixth edition has been published since 16 September 2026. No reason to rush: your 2015 certification stays valid across the whole transition period. Here is what applies now, what stays the same, and how you as an SME can prepare.

The timeline

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026 — the sixth edition, listed by ISO as published. The transition period starts running with it. The official deadline is set by the IAF and had not been issued at the time of writing; by previous practice it is three years, so around September 2029. Until then your ISO 9001:2015 certification stays valid.

A note on language editions: in Switzerland the standard is already available in German — SNV's SN EN ISO 9001:2026 has applied since 16 September 2026 and replaces SN EN ISO 9001:2015 together with amendment A1:2024. In Germany, DIN EN ISO 9001 is expected in November 2026 according to DIN Media.

What changes

ISO summarises the new edition itself: better clarity for organizations of every size, more weight on quality culture and leadership, the separation of risks and opportunities, and closer alignment with other management system standards.

Quality culture & leadership: a lived quality culture and ethical conduct carry more weight.
Risks and opportunities: treated separately, so opportunities are actively pursued rather than only risks being fended off.
Alignment: the structure follows the other management system standards more closely, which eases combining it with ISO 14001 or ISO 27001.

What is often wrongly counted as new: climate change. Climate-related aspects in 4.1 and 4.2 are widely named as a novelty of the revision — still, even now. They have been part of the 2015 edition since amendment A1:2024; the new edition carries them over, it does not introduce them. ISO's own summary of the new edition accordingly does not mention the topic. If you have answered the climate question in your context, there is nothing to catch up on here. What stays the same

First things first: the core of the standard stays. Document control, management review, internal audit, corrective action and the Plan-Do-Check-Act spirit carry on. A well-run 2015 QMS is already most of a 2026 QMS — the revision builds on it, it doesn't overturn it. You can read exactly that in our ISO 9001 clause library today.

How to prepare now

The best preparation for any standard revision is a QMS that's lived and complete — not a binder fetched from the basement for the audit. If you know an honest readiness score today, see your gaps, and keep your documents in your own Git, then a fresh assessment becomes cheap rather than a project.

Complete, not cluttered

An honest readiness score and a gap list show where you stand — the basis to reconcile quickly against a new edition.
Lived, not filed

A QMS used in daily work can be carried forward. A dead handbook has to be re-done at revision time.
Your data, your pace

Your documents live in your own Git. A re-assessment costs you no migration and no vendor's permission.
Starting early pays off

The transition is a three-year window, not a single deadline — starting early spreads the work and avoids the last-minute jam.

Honestly framed

We give no "transition guarantee". Moving between editions is built and shipped in easo, but the comparison of your coverage under 2015 versus 2026 is not usable yet — it needs the model for the new edition, and that only exists once we have worked through the standard text. We name no date for it while we cannot promise one. And as always: auditors assess actual implementation, not filled-in templates. What we promise, we can prove.

Is the new ISO 9001 here?

Yes. ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026 — the sixth edition, listed by ISO as published. In Switzerland the German-language SN EN ISO 9001:2026 has applied since the same day. Your ISO 9001:2015 certification is untouched for now and stays valid across the whole transition period.

By when do I have to switch to the new edition?

The official deadline is set by the IAF and had not been issued at the time of writing. By previous practice it is three years from publication, so around September 2029. Your existing certification stays valid until the end of that period; we will add the confirmed date here once it exists.

Do I have to do anything now?

No, nothing is overdue. The transition period runs for years, and the switch normally happens at a surveillance or recertification audit that was due anyway. If you keep your QMS maintained and complete, the revision becomes an update rather than a project.

What changes?

ISO's own summary names four things: better clarity, more weight on quality culture and leadership, the separation of risks and opportunities, and closer alignment with other management system standards. Does my ISO 9001:2015 certification lose its validity?

Not immediately. It stays valid across the whole transition period; the switch usually happens at one of your regular surveillance or recertification audits within that window.
